How to Organize Your Junk Drawer

Organize Your Junk Drawer

Stop stressing over the fact that you have a junk drawer, everyone does, and that’s okay! Some items just do not belong anywhere else!

Yes, it is totally possible to have an organized junk drawer, and it really isn’t that hard to accomplish! This is also a great project that only takes 15 minutes or less!

We’re going to use my fiance’s junk drawer as an example of how to finally gain control over your junk drawer. One of the main reasons he and I work well together is because I let him have his messy space, but he also realizes that once in a while those messy spaces do need to be cleaned out. Thankfully, we do not share closets, so I also just ignore the fact that he even has a closet.

Here is the insanity that is my fiance’s junk drawer! I would have taken during pictures of the process but most of it was just trash.

Step 1 – Take everything out!

I mean it, just take everything out of the drawer. This is a great first step because you can usually throw away half of what is in the drawer. When you go to put everything back, its usually half of what you started with!

Step 2 – Make Piles!

We started out pretty simple with our piles, and divided into 3 sections:

  • Trash
  • Keep
  • Unsure

It’s best to just go through this quickly instead of dwelling on each item.  If it is obvious that is it trash, then add it it to the trash, and if it is not obvious, then add it to the unsure pile. The items you are sure you are going to keep are added to the keep pile. Simple as that, don’t think too much into it!

Step 3 – Contain the randomness!

Such technical words here, y’all! But really, is there any other way to organize your junk drawer? It is called the junk drawer for a reason. Your best solution is to just to contain the chaos as much as you can, use baskets and other containers to organize your junk drawer.

This is how I organized my fiance’s junk drawer, and it looks so much better than before! He had a lot of pens and pencils because he likes to study in bed. Instead of moving them to the office, I added this container to at least catch them when he just throws them in. The other containers in both drawers just catch the smaller items that don’t belong anywhere. This ranges from flash drives, glasses cases, chargers, other wires, change, ect.

I am really happy with how this turned out, and don’t worry, he definitely helped me organize this! No telling how long it will actually last, but hopefully it keeps some order to it!

What a transformation! I think you have a great attitude with your fiance btw. It’s hard when one of you is more prone to organization than the other. Like you, I try and give my husband his space but he knows that every so often it needs to be cleaned off and organized.

Thank you! It can be hard at times, but we have learned to work together. It also helps that I can either close a drawer or door, and ignore the mess hah!

I am ALL about organizing. Very important to take everything out and start fresh. I love that step. Super important to make a great difference in your drawers! 🙂

I become so overwhelmed when it come to clutter. I believe everything that we own needs to have a designated space and place. You did a phenomenal job by having a ‘catch all’ for him to place his miscellaneous in instead of directly in the drawer.Such great tips!

    • January 27, 2015 / 10:45 PM

When I get overwhelmed, I start with a super small project like a drawer, or just one small area. That really helps because then I usually get motivated to do more. Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!

See I need an inner neat freak. I love this. I have a problem where its hard for me to let go of things (yeah yeah, I know, its called being a hoarder lol) I need to go rearrange some drawers right now.

    • January 28, 2015 / 10:36 PM

My fiance has the same issues, he keeps receipts for the most random things, so it is definitely okay to need some help sometimes.

  10. January 26, 2015 / 9:13 AM

It’s containing the randomness where I need to be better! I am always cleaning out a drawer in my bedroom, but I never organize what’s left. I also don’t dump it out–I just pick through it. I’ll have to do this, really soon!

    • January 28, 2015 / 10:35 PM

Depending on how bad the drawer is, sometimes I just pick things out. This time was a dumping session haha

  11. January 26, 2015 / 11:52 AM

You did a great job! I need to do a purge and then organize.

  12. January 26, 2015 / 12:21 PM

um thank you this is 1000% necessary in my life right now. i feel like every time i organize my drawer, it messes itself back up but this seems like it might actually stay that way!

    • January 28, 2015 / 6:27 PM

Glad I could help! Good luck on organizing!

  13. January 26, 2015 / 12:38 PM

I need to do this with my makeup but I just hate how much some plastic bins look and if they have the color then they do not have the slots!

    • January 28, 2015 / 6:28 PM

Covering my pins in a pretty paper is on my list of to dos for my bins!

  14. January 26, 2015 / 2:30 PM

Someday I will tackle our junk drawer. Someday…lol

    • January 28, 2015 / 6:29 PM

Just start small! It is less overwhelming if you do a little bit everyday!

  15. January 26, 2015 / 3:13 PM

Thanks for the tips….Now I’m off to do some purging!!! 🙂

    • January 28, 2015 / 6:30 PM

      Awesome! No problem! Good luck<3

  16. January 26, 2015 / 4:51 PM

I need to do this! My junk drawer is an absolute disaster right now.

  17. November 30, 2015 / 6:36 PM

I think we all have that one drawer that collects all the different odds-and-ends throughout the house. We have one in our office and one in the kitchen. It’s pretty embarrassing. Great tips & can’t wait to try it for myself!
